WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (34-13-5) weren't at their best to start Saturday's contest against the Bridgeport Islanders (21-22-7), falling behind 2-0 in the opening eight minutes of play, but rallied for four straight goals and held on for a 4-3 win on Military Appreciation Night at the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.
Filip Hallander scored in his first game back in Wilkes-Barre since the 2022-23 season to start the Penguins' rally late in the first period, and Atley Calvert recorded his 10th of the season 2:03 later to send the Penguins and Islanders to the second period tied at 2-2.
Sebastian Aho scored a go-ahead goal in the middle frame, and Ville Koivunen extended the Penguins' lead to 4-2 in the third period.
Liam Foudy scored shorthanded with 6:50 left to play to bring Bridgeport back within a goal, but that's as close as they would get in a 4-3 setback to the Penguins Saturday.
Adam Beckman and Julien Gauthier also scored goals for Bridgeport, who got 27 saves from Jeremy Smith in the loss.
Joel Blomqvist stopped 25 of the 28 shots that came his way, including a big diving cover of a loose puck in his crease in the final minute of play with the game on the line.
These two teams rematch Sunday afternoon in Connecticut.
