WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (44-17-9) put forth a solid effort against a Hershey Bears team (31-30-9) fighting for their playoff lives, but ultimately were unable to finish on their chances in what ended up being a 5-1 loss Wednesday night.

A late first period goal by Corey Schueneman combined with a pair of goals 2:04 apart early in the middle frame - from Ivan Miroschnichenko and Matt Strome, respectively, vaulted Hershey to a 3-0 lead.

Atley Calvert made it goals in four straight games to get the Penguins on the board, but it was the only puck that got past Bears' goaltender Clay Stevenson (32 saves) as Hershey added two empty net goals in the final 3:38 of regulation to complete the 5-1 final score.

The Bears' win, combined with Lehigh Valley's 7-1 loss to Springfield, clinched Hershey a playoff spot.
