WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins opened the Atlantic Division Finals with a stalwart effort defensively, shutting out the Springfield Thunderbirds 2-0 to open up a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-five series Tuesday night at Mohegan Arena.

Bill Zonnon, a 19-year-old rookie who just joined the team for his first practice on Saturday, broke the scoreless tie in the second period with his first career AHL goal in his pro debut.

Tanner Howe added an insurance marker in the third period on an unassisted breakaway tally, and that's all the offense the Penguins needed as Sergei Murashov earned his first shutout of the 2026 postseason with a 24-save effort.
